It is winter, but is it colder than usual?

If you thought it felt a little bit colder than usual yesterday, you’d be right, parts of the Northern Rivers experienced the coldest day of the year so far on Thursday.

Overnight temperatures dropped to 1.1C in Lismore, which was a few degrees colder than proceeding days.

The mean minimum temperature for July in Lismore was 2.2C.

But the coldest Lismore July day on record was recorded on July 27, 1968, where the minimum temperatures dropped to -3.5C.

Spare a thought for people in Tenterfield though. Minimum temperatures were a chilly -5.9C overnight. Not quite as chilly as the town’s all time July low though, which was experienced on July 10, 2006, when temperatures dropped to -10.6C.

Temperatures dropped to 1.5C in Casino on Thursday, which, while cold, was a little more pleasant than its coldest day – July 31, 2010, where temperatures dropped to -3.2C.

Ballina was a little warmer, recording a low of 6.1C. Tuesday however, recorded a low of 3.6C in the town.

Byron Bay temperatures dropped to 9.2C, and Tweed Heads reached 4.3C.

The good news is that its not expected to get as cold over the next few days, but rain was forecast for today, Friday.

Falls were not expected to be heavy though, and look likely to clear by the weekend.

Maximum temperatures of 19-20C were forecast for Lismore over the next few days, and minimum temperatures of 5-9C were forecast.

Coastal temperatures look to be higher over the weekend, reaching lows of 8-11C and highs of 19-23C.
