A Lismore man who took exception to a police request to turn out his pockets, removed his pants instead before abusing police, a court heard.

John Robert Hanstock, 55, objected to a police search on March 29 after he was stopped on Molesworth St and told police he had “about $5 of weed on me” court documents state.

When police asked him to turn out his pockets Hanstock stated “I don’t have any pockets” despite several pockets being easily observable, before proceeding to pull down his pants for the full view of the “heavy flow of traffic” and officers.

Court documents state Hanstock attempted to leave the scene and became agitated when he found out he was under arrest for the 0.86g of drugs found.

“I’ll f***ing kill you. do you know who I am c***” court documents reveal Hanstock told police.

“I’ll have you c**** bashed to death, I was an OMCG member for six years.”

The public outburst followed another two altercations at Riverlands Drug and Alcohol Centre in January.

On January 15, Hanstock told a security officer supervisor to “get f***ed” before walking towards him with a large pot plant in a “staunch” manner court documents state.

Hanstock returned to the centre on January 31 and while waiting for staff, headed to the reception screen and spat the window, only avoiding contact due to a glass divide the documents further state.

Hanstock plead guilty to two counts of behaving in an offensive manner, one count of intimidation, intimidating a police officer in the execution of duty and possessing a prohibited drug on Monday in Lismore Local Court.

Hanstock’s solicitor Annabel Wurth said the “inappropriate” behaviour led to him being banned from Riverlands clinic which meant he had to go “cold turkey” affecting his moods.

Magistrate Jeff Linden said both matters were “offensive”.

“There are threats made to kill, in particular directed at police in a very colourful manner,” he said.

He convicted Hanstock to an Intensive Corrections Order for 12 months for the intimidation and intimidation of a police officer charges.

The order expires on May 15,2023 and he must abstain from drugs.

For the remaining charges, he was convicted but not further punished.
