North Coast energy retailer has racked up some impressive numbers and accolades in its first five years in business.

On the weekend it celebrated its fifth anniversary with a get together at Federal’s popular hall, which is festooned with rooftop solar panels.

In just five years, Enova has signed up 10,000 customers and was recently named best

electricity company for 2020 by Choice.

Enova has some guiding principles which sound pretty good on paper and in practice.

It aims to keep jobs and profits in local communities; build self-sustaining and resilient communities through locally generated and shared renewable energy; to assist communities to make the transition to renewable energy without leaving anyone behind; and to reduce carbon emissions.

Enova Community Energy CEO Felicity Stening said she was proud the company had stayed true to its vision over the last five years.

“Enova was born from the grass roots in direct response to protests against coal seam gas on the Northern Rivers,” she said.

“We are for the community, for renewable energy and for transitioning away from fossil fuels. We’re proud to generate community impact, to support communities to become resilient, through renewable energy initiatives.”

She nominate Enova’s top five achievements over its first five years of operation:

1. Supported by 1,600 Australian community shareholders Enova commenced operations in regional NSW funded through investment by 1,100 community shareholders in 2016 and grew to 1,600 shareholders through crowd-funding in 2018.

2. Enova expanded to the greater Sydney market in 2019, to cover the whole of NSW and expanded into South East Queensland in early 2021.

3. Innovating distributed, local renewable energy projects to boost renewables and keep

money local.

Choice has ranked Enova Energy as the best electricity retailer for our customer call response,

complaints and environmental sustainability over the past 12 month.

5. Donated $80,795 to charity partners.

So what’s in store for the next five years for Enova?

1. An increase in Enova’s renewable energy generation and storage asset base.

2. Enova as an effective enabler of distributed energy and electricity demand management

solutions meaning that Enova will be equipped to support and enable communities to

generate, store and share their own renewable energy.

3. Growing the Enova customer base beyond the 10,000 strong community we currently have

and to see the distribution of 50% of its profits, (after tax and reinvestment) going into

Enova’s not-for-profit arm, to generate significant impact in community renewable energy

projects, energy efficiency and energy coaching.

4. Enova working locally with regional and metropolitan communities to develop renewable

energy and storage initiatives, such as microgrids, virtual power plants, local energy trading,

street batteries , increasing resilience and lowering costs to households and businesses.
