A MONTH-long nightmare will confront motorists using Lismore’s busy Rotary Dr roundabout when road resurfacing begins tomorrow.

Until June 19, Lismore City Council staff will be replacing about 200m of asphalt on Ballina Rd on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services.

Diversions will be in place that will see access to the roundabout cut off at Ross St, Kellas St, Rotary Dr and High St on weekends during working hours.

Motorists wanting to access Ballina Rd from Rotary Dr or High St will face the up-hill, down-dale drive to Gallagher Dr through Lismore Heights, or have to drive across to Dibbs St, East Lismore.

More pain faces motorists who want to access Ballina Rd from Kellas St or Ross St, as they are advised to used William Blair Ave, where they can only turn left, back toward the roadworks.

An RMS spokeswoman advised motorists planning to drive through the impacted area to allow five minutes’ extra travel time.

“The diversion in place will require some residents to turn left out of local streets and travel away from the road works on weekends during work hours, then make a U-turn in order to travel towards Ballina,” the spokeswoman said.

“Extra traffic controllers will be in place to provide advice to motorists while the detour is in place.

“Roads and Maritime Services takes into consideration the impact on road users and the community when planning work activities on the state’s road network.

“The resurfacing work between the roundabout at Rotary Dr/Kellas St and High St on the Bruxner Hwy is taking place during four weekends.

“Substantially fewer vehicles travel through this section of the highway on weekends compared to a week day.

“Night work was considered during the planning phase but ruled out due to potential noise impacts on local residents.”
