LISMORE'S new city centre manager says the city's cultural diversity is also one of its key marketing strengths.

Jason Mumford officially stepped into the role on Thursday with a spring in his step and ambitious plans at the ready.

The marketing whiz with 25 years experience is confident he can achieve continued improvement in the city centre and get tourist numbers snowballing.

"In the last few years I've had a really good solid focus on digital and social media marketing and I've mentored quite a few local small to medium businesses," he said.

"When I first saw the branding and the plan for what was to unfold (for the city centre) I thought it was pretty exciting stuff because you don't really see that sort of thing in the Northern Rivers.

"It's been a dramatic change in the Lismore city centre in the last five years. It's been revitalised and nowhere else in the region do you find a city centre that's actually tidy and presented as well as this is."

Mr Mumford said the city centre's diverse culture and mix of lifestyles give it an interesting and rare flair for a regional hub.

"There's alternative, but there's also your business crowd, tourists, locals that have been here forever, farmers, artists - it's just a real mix," he said.

The city centre has undergone some dramatic, and often welcome, changes in recent years and Mr Mumford said improvements would continue.

"I think we've got a long way to go in terms of how we can market the revitalisation of the town," he said.

"A lot of good work and solid work has been done to date and I suppose it's now my turn to take it to another step."

Mr Mumford was previously the executive officer at Northern Rivers Tourism in the late '90s and currently sits on the Northern Rivers Tourism board.

He was also president of Ballina Tourism and Hospitality for two years and ran his own marketing and communications consultancy.
