Wedding days, graduations and more: These are some of the events Covid and the Qld border closure have impacted

Northern Rivers residents have shared some of the ways their lives have been impacted by the Queensland border closure and Covid concerns.

It can be easy to view the Queensland border closure by measuring the traffic jam in minutes, or kilometres.

The human impact of the restrictions is more complex and heart-wrenching.

Northern Star readers have shared some of the ways the new border closure and broader Covid-19 concerns have impacted their lives.

Broad range of events hit but Covid

Angela Ward said the Richmond River Endurance Riders had postponed their New Italy scheduled for next weekend.

Karen Johnson said the Granite & Gravel in Tenterfield, scheduled for August was cancelled along with her local F45 end of challenge results party and CWA Christmas in July dinner.

For Heidi Ruttley, it was her Year 12 formal and a holiday to the Sunshine Coast that were canned.

“So bloody disappointing,” she said.

Angie Dwyer said her friend had an upcoming wedding impacted.

“She had to postpone it this time last year as well,” Ms Dwyer said.

Tragically, Katie Louise said she had to cancel her own wedding last-minute.

“Had to cancel my wedding with less than 48 hours notice,” she said.

“Was getting married less than five minutes from Coolangatta in NSW.”

Marnie Johnston said the pandemic had made it impossible to see relatives after a precious addition to the family.

“I’m from the Northern Rivers but live in the UK,” she said.
“We were set to bring our then 6-month old daughter out to Australia last May to meet my family for the first time.

“She’s now almost two and obviously we still haven’t been able to travel to Australia/still hasn’t met her family.

“We were also meant to have our wedding in Australia during that trip, but it got cancelled too obviously.”

Lyn Evans said her wedding was postponed and for Natalie Gill, it was her hens party on the chopping block.

“My hens night will have to be postponed, hopefully won’t have to postpone my wedding as well,” Ms Gill said.

Micklin Edwards was facing the prospect of missing their daughter’s wedding.

Kelly Anderson was due to attend a “stadium stomp” in Brisbane at the weekend.

“This event was postponed from last year due to Covid and rescheduled to (Sunday) and due to the borders closing we now can’t go,” she said.

“We had accommodation also booked that we also now can’t get money back from they will only give us a credit.

“One of the girls called Queensland Services and they stated because it is not a regular sport we are participating in we are unable to go.”

Jyllie Jackson had “three events cancelled due to Covid concerns”.

Nicole York said she was also impacted.

“(I) was supposed to go up and see a sick family member so they could meet the grandson they have never seen before,” she said.

Christine Bell said she would be missing her granddaughter’s first birthday because of the situation.
