One Northern Rivers nurse has decided to “walk the walk” and go alcohol-free this July in solidarity with her patients.

Lismore McGrath breast cancer nurse Karen Hennings has been a vital help for many residents over the Lismore, Ballina, Kyogle and Richmond Valley area for seven years now.

But a new campaign will see her take on some of her own health advice.

She will be one of many McGrath Breast Cancer nurses participating in Dry July this year, with the money raised going towards funding nurses across Australia.

Ms Hennings said she was inspired by the families she supports who are impacted by breast cancer.

“I’m always talking with my patients about how difficult it is to give up alcohol when experiencing breast cancer. It’s time I walk the walk,” Ms Hennings said.

McGrath Foundation CEO Holly Masters said she was extremely proud to see so many nurses and supporters get behind the movement.

“All day, every day, our inspiring nurses are helping families experiencing breast cancer and it’s amazing to then see them stepping up even further by getting involved with Dry July,” she said.

“We are so proud of Karen’s commitment and fundraising efforts and thank the community for getting behind her.

“On a personal level, I am so excited to join the McGrath Foundation Dry July team.

“It has never been more important to take a break from alcohol and sign up to this year’s campaign.”

Ms Masters added that fundraisers like the Dry July campaign ensured foundation kept providing continuous support to Australians “no matter where they live, for free”.
