After relentless wet weather saw the postponement of Primex, the sun shone bright for Breakfast with the Butchers at Casino Beef Week on Friday.
Toddlers, grandparents, babes in prams, parents and teenagers lined Walker Street to get their laughing gear around the best free snag or steak in town.
Local butchers, police, and community groups donned their aprons and picked up the tongs to fill the air with barbecue smoke and the sound of steaks and sausages sizzling.
Richmond Valley Council mayor Robert Mustow said the turnout had been strong.
“Especially after all the wet weather we’ve had, the people have responded and it’s outstanding,” Mr Mustow said.
“I think with the sun shining this morning people have said, ‘Yep, we’re going out’, and they’ve come out in big numbers today.”
Beef Week is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
“It’s pretty outstanding for a voluntary organisation to run something like this for 40 years,” Mr Mustow said.
“Usually you’ll see festivals come and go but this one has stuck around and we’ll be here for a lot longer still.”
Beef Week also crowned its Queen for 2022.
Casino showgirl Taylor Dawson took out the title from four other competitors at the Casino RSM on Saturday.
“It’s a great opportunity to get out in the community,” Ms Dawson said.
“It’s an absolute honour to be out doing things like this, especially after what we’ve all been through,”
Beef Week president Frank McKey said they had over 200 people for the opening ball which they haven’t had in a long time.
“The fashion parade was on Tuesday night and we had a group of ladies bring that together who had never done it before,” Mr McKey said.
He said Thursday was a feature for school kids and young cattle people, as they got to show and parade their charges in the CBD.
More remains for Saturday which is pegged with many events from live cattle parades, wood chop, pie eating contests, busking, whip cracking titles and of course, the Mr Beef contest.
“Saturdays have something for everyone,” Mr McKey said.
The Casino Beef Week will continue through to May 31 when it wraps up for another year.
