The latest restaurant to hit the Lismore culinary scene is a passion project for owners Jerry Kyeong and wife Yasuka Murakami that pays homage to their home roots.
Kyeong 109, located at 109 Dawson St, opened this week as a takeaway business.
While the restaurant’s grand reveal was not exactly what Mr Kyeong planned, his quick thinking and years as the owner of a beloved market stall and chef meant he was than qualified.
Ms Murakami said her Korean-born husband was influenced by his tried-and-true family recipes.
“His mum is really good cook, he grew up learning a lot from her and his mum’s mum-in-law,” she said.
“A lot of his recipes have been passed on from generations.”
Featuring favourites such as beef bulgogi and Korean Fried Chicken, Mr Kyeong said his bibimbap and Yangnyeom chicken were crowd pleasers and said he would evolve the menu as the finished restaurant came to be.
“It’s always been his dream of opening his own restaurant,” Ms Murakami said.
The pair, who have lived in Lismore for seven years, said they were taken aback by the positive response from residents already.
“We really love this community, everyone is really nice but I didn’t expect so many people to share my post on Facebook and pass on the news to friends,” Ms Murakami said.
“We’ve had so much response and it’s really appreciated.”
Kyeong 109, is located in the building once occupied by the popular pizza joint, Fire in the Belly.
Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 11.30am-7.30pm.
Phone number is 0423 418 222.
