GONE are the days when asbestos was the greatest product to use when building a house.

Australia now has one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world.

If you are doing house renovations Lismore City Council wants you to be aware of asbestos in your home and to protect your family from its hazards.

Council provides a safe way to dispose of asbestos through its $30 Household Asbestos Disposal Kits. The kits are for anyone wanting to remove and dispose of up to 10m2 of bonded asbestos and include safety gear, plastic and tape for wrapping asbestos, and information on staying safe.

Products containing asbestos generally do not pose a risk if they are in good condition and are undisturbed.

It is when products and materials are weathered, broken or punctured that harmful fibres can be released.

Special precautions should always be taken, even for minor renovation works that don't require council approval.

One in three Australian homes contain asbestos, which was used in a wide range of building products including fibro sheeting, roof shingles and guttering, vinyl floor coverings, and water drainage and flue pipes.

All houses built before 1987 in Australia potentially contain asbestos products.

Household Asbestos Disposal Kits are available at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre at 313 Wyrallah Road and the $30 fee includes the cost of disposal.

If you have more than 10m2 of bonded asbestos (equivalent to three sheets of asbestos containing fibro) you are required by law to engage a licensed asbestos removal contractor.

Council urges all home renovators to take precautions and always use a kit should you need to remove asbestos.

Just one breath of asbestos fibres can have deadly consequences - so please do the right thing.
