More than $10,000 worth of equipment and tools were lost after a shipping container owned by the Cabarita Beach Dunecare group went up in flames on Tuesday morning.

A Far North Coast Rural Fire Service spokeswoman confirmed the fire happened just before 7am at Tweed Coast Rd.

One RFS and a NSW Fire and Rescue crew attended the fire, which caused “extensive damage” to the container and its contents.

The RFS spokeswoman said the cause of the fire was originally suspected to be mulch overheating.

Cabarita Beach Dunecare group co-ordinator Faye Nash said the group lost around $10,000 worth of tools and gardening equipment, plus the cost of the container.

Ms Nash said the group had owned the container for eight to ten years.

“We are trying to understand the magnitude of the loss at the moment,” she said.

“Tweed Shire Council purchased a number of the tools and equipment for us, so they may be able to claim insurance on them, but it will take us some time to recover from this.”

The group has around 20 members, around half of them are currently active.

NSW Police did not attend to the fire and the blaze’s cause was not deemed suspicious.
