Knox Grammar Principal confirms 74 students in vile ‘Gang Gang’ Discord chatroom

In a letter to parents, the principal of Knox Grammar has confirmed 74 students were involved in the vile ‘Gang Gang’ Discord chatroom – and 20 met the “threshold for consequences”.

Knox group chat exposes teens comments on child pornography, racism and misogyny

Knox Grammar has now admitted there were far more students caught up in the Gang Gang chat room who swapped and posted vile racial, misogynistic and pedophilic comments than they first stated.

The exclusive private school at Wahroonga in Sydney’s north only informed parents about the appalling material last week after being contacted by The Daily Telegraph after having kept the scandal secret from the broader Knox community for over a month.

In a newsletter released on Tuesday, Principal Scott James said there were 20 students “who met the policy threshold for consequences”.

Less than two hours after being contacted by the Telegraph last Tuesday Mr Scott referred to the chat room as “an incident’’ involving only “several boys’.

Knox has been in possession of the material since late July but has only now revealed the extent of the number involved, saying there are also individuals from other schools both male and female.

“I note for the record that we did engage with police, but were unable to communicate with (Knox families) until police confirmed there were no criminal offence or child protection matters involved. That timing coincided with media interest last week,” Mr James said.

In fact it was The Daily Telegraph that passed on the material to the police over concerns the material was of a criminal nature.

Knox Grammar refused to answer questions from the Telegraph last week about when they contacted the police and how long they had known about the “Gang Gang “ chat room before acting.

In the chat room using a site called Discord there were comments about wanting to have sex with children, loving Hitler and raping girls.

Mr James said there were 74 handles in the chatroom while the Telegraph understands more than 160 individuals were logged on to the site which has been operating for two years.

Knox is considered one of Sydney’s most elite schools with fees of over $30,000 a year.

It was condemned by the Royal Commission into child sex abuse in 2016 for covering up abuse of students for years which resulted in five teachers later charged and convicted for sex offences against students.

NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said revelations in The Daily Telegraph were “disturbing and unacceptable”.
