Police have identified a man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle involved in a fiery crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge after taking the unusual step of releasing a photograph of the suspect’s distinctive tattoo.
The man is so badly injured he has not been able to talk to police since the accident on Monday morning and remains in Royal North Shore Hospital.
He was not carrying any identification when he allegedly crashed the stolen Kluger SUV head on into another vehicle.
A third car was also caught up in the crash.
The man’s fingerprints are not in the police database and no one has reported anyone matching his physical description as missing.
The tattoo shows an eye on the top of the man’s hand, with an illustration including wavy lines coming from the eye across his fingers and wrist.
He is described as being of caucasian appearance, aged in his 20s or 30s, about 175cm tall; he was wearing a black hooded jacket and red shorts at the time of the accident. By releasing a photo of the tattoo, police hoped someone would recognise it and the man.
Police allege he carjacked the Kluger while the driver was changing a tyre in Sussex St in the CBD just before 7am on Monday.
CCTV and dashcam footage showed the vehicle driving along a one-way street before going on to the Harbour Bridge travelling north.
Vivid footage shows the vehicle careering on to incoming traffic lanes before eventually crashing into a white HiAce van.
The Kluger burst into flames with two other vehicles.
Their occupants were all injured.
Motorists were able to drag them to safety before paramedics arrived and three people were transported to hospital.
