An out-of-control SUV that crashed into oncoming traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Monday morning was allegedly taken from its owner in a carjacking just minutes earlier.
Harrowing dashcam video captured the moment the Toyota Kluger slammed head-on into a van, about 7.05am, before flipping on its roof and eventually bursting into flames.
Incredibly, no one was killed in the incident.
Police believe the Toyota Kluger was stolen from the inner-CBD shortly before the crash, with the carjacker allegedly pouncing as the owner changed a flat tyre.
“While investigations are still very early in the piece, they do lead us to believe at this point in time that the (Toyota) Kluger may have been stolen from the vicinity of Sussex St and Goulburn St this morning,” Sydney City Police Area Commander Superintendent Rohan Cramsie said.
“It’s still very early to say the full details of what has occurred. It does appear to us as though the owner of the (Toyota) Kluger was changing his tyre.
“We will allege at this stage that he was approached by the male, who had a conversation with him about his car.
“There was a short scuffle … and then the male who asked about the (Toyota) Kluger got in and drove it away and then headed towards the Harbour Bridge.”
Supt Cramsie said the alleged carjacker was now suffering serious injuries and under police guard in hospital.
He praised the efforts of passing motorists who helped pull those involved from their vehicles before the inferno erupted.
“I have seen the dashcam footage. It’s extremely confronting and I can only start to begin to imagine what the other drivers would have witnessed and experienced when they saw that vehicle coming toward them,” he said.
The dashcam video footage shows the allegedly stolen car driving in the wrong lane on the Sydney Harbour Bridge before colliding with oncoming traffic.
The crash happened near Millers Point, and left three motorists injured and a car engulfed in flames after it flipped onto its roof during the carnage.
The Harbour Bridge was closed in both directions for more than an hour following the collision, causing chaos for motorists at peak hour, but reopened at about 10am.
Dashcam footage of the incident was posted online shortly after, showing the moment of impact.
In the vision, taken by a motorist travelling across the bridge, a black SUV, believed to be a Toyota Kluger, is filmed travelling northbound in the wrong lane.
The vehicle then swerves suddenly to the right and smashes head-on into a white van.
Sources said the car was allegedly stolen from the CBD on Monday morning.
The force of the impact sees the SUV flip onto its roof, with the van rolling backwards perpendicular to oncoming traffic.
A bus and dozens of other cars are filmed slamming on the brakes to avoid hitting the two damaged vehicles, as smoke begins to waft from the overturned SUV.
Bystanders leap into action, running over to the SUV to try and drag the driver free, while another in high vis goes to the van driver’s aid.
The third car involved in the crash, thought to be a Honda CRV, is not visible in the footage.
The three people were injured during the collision, including the man in his 30s who sustained head injuries and a woman who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The van driver, a man in his 20s, was trapped inside following the crash and had to be freed by Police Rescue officers, before being taken to St Vincent‘s Hospital with pelvic and leg fractures in a serious but stable condition.
