Two men have faced court accused of killing a father in a horror crash that miraculously left his two young children unscathed.
William David Strong, 68, and Adam Ohlmeyer, 46, were allegedly driving dangerously in a truck with an unsafe load just after 6pm on August 6, 2021.
Police will alleged a large roll of wire struck Martin “Marty” Stait’s Mazda Bravo causing serious head and chest injuries.
Mr Stait was flown to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but the father of two tragically died on August 8, 2021.
His two children in the car, an eight-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, did not suffer any injuries in the crash.
Tributes came flooding in for the Ulmarra man at his funeral on August 13, 2021.
Councillor Debrah Novak told the crowd at the memorial she fondly recalled watching Mr Stait share his love of gemstones.
“I used to watch him with the kids around the stall; he was really generous with his knowledge and just a very kind young guy,” she said.
Crowds gathered in Grafton to remember Marty Stait, the father of two who tragically died after a roll of wire collided with his vehicle.
It is understood Mr Stait’s eight year old daughter called Triple 0 for help on the tragic evening.
“To be that young and have the presence of mind to keep it together and call it in … she deserves a medal,” Ms Novak said.
William David Strong was charged with dangerous driving causing death while driving in a dangerous manner and driving an unsafely loaded vehicle causing death.
Adam Ohlmeyer was charged with being an accessory before the fact to dangerous driving causing death while driving in a dangerous manner and driving an unsafely loaded vehicle causing death.
They faced Grafton Local Court on Monday but no formal pleas were entered.
The incident occurred near Swan Creek Bridge along Big River Way near Boundary Road, Swan Creek.
Police will allege the truck was “unsafely loaded”, causing the wire to strike Mr Stait’s car.
Strong and Ohlmeyer will next face Grafton Local Court on March 6, 2023.
