A Clarence Valley man will spend the next 12 months behind bars after being caught with child sex material.

Peter Munday, 39, pleaded guilty to three charges relating to importing a childlike sex doll and possessing child abuse material when he was arrested in May 2020 by Australian Federal Police officers.

The import of the doll was initially detected by Australian Border Force authorities. Delivery of the doll was permitted to proceed which led to a search of Munday’s premises including the seizure of computer equipment and an iPhone.

“All childlike sex dolls detected at the border are automatically seized by the ABF,” Australian Border Force Commander Enforcement Operations East, Justin Bathurst said.

“Where ABF officers find additional evidence of child exploitation material, we refer it to the appropriate federal and state authorities for investigation.”

In addition to the doll, the investigation revealed that the Gulmarrad man, who was described in Court as “reclusive and disengaged from the community” had in his possession 3950 image files and 330 video files which constituted child abuse material.

The images were of children aged from two to 15 years.

It was also revealed in the District Court that Munday’s iPhone contained the order confirmation for the childlike sex doll.

According to court documents, it was described as “Chinese love doll teen sexy doll 100CM” with evidence showing a selection of the physical characteristics of the doll sought by Munday.

The police fact sheet states that in addition to the doll, other sexually explicit, childlike items were found in Munday’s wardrobe.

Coffs Harbour District Court Judge Jonathon Priestley noted in his judgment that while these additional sexually explicit items were, in his view, the most serious element of the three charges, he was confident of the “prospect of rehabilitation if there can be meaningful intervention and appropriate counselling and supervision.”

Munday was convicted of the three offences and sentenced to two years in jail. He will be eligible for release in 12 months’ time with a 12-month release order with conditions.
