Court documents state Ferguson was on bail for a separate matter when he allegedly broke into the unit while being armed with a 20cm kitchen knife at about 8.30pm on September 13.

Ferguson was arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station. He allegedly committed the offence while he was on conditional bail, police facts state.

He was charged with aggravated entering of a unit to steal while armed.

Officers denied bail because Ferguson did not provide a reason as to why his detention was not justified, facts state.

At court, police prosecutor Brett Gradisnik requested an adjournment.

Magistrate Kathy Crittenden said the matter was a strictly indictable charge and adjourned the case to February 13.
