A pillow and a kitchen rod were the first things two brothers could find as they fended off an early morning intruder at the Grafton home.

Eric Wratten, 87 and Kelvin Wratten, 84, were shaken after their ordeal which began about 4.20am Tuesday when Eric confronted an intruder who was halfway through a window of their Hoof Street home.

Kelvin was woken by Eric calling out from his bedroom and went in to see the intruder hitting his brother with the flyscreen.

They didn’t realise there was a second intruder inside as they fought of their initial foe with a pillow and a kitchen rod.

The tussle went on for a minute or two as the intruder demanded their wallets before fleeing back out the window.

It was only after the man fled and police arrived that the brothers discovered there had been a second intruder in the other bedroom.

The pensioners said they led a simple life and had nothing to rob.

“They got nothing and we escaped unhurt,” Kelvin said.

“It’s a very frightening experience to happen to a couple of elderly people.

“It shouldn’t happen,” he said.

He said he and his brother had never experienced anything like it before.

“We never expected that to happen,” he said.

“You hear about it but I never dreamt it would happen here.”

Detectives are appealing for public assistance to help identify the intruders.

Detectives are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area, to contact Grafton Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
