Palmers Island head-on collision leaves woman seriously injured

A woman has been taken under police escort from the scene of a serious two-car crash that has blocked traffic on Yamba Road.

A two-car crash has closed Yamba Road for much of this afternoon with at least one person seriously injured in the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Wynyabbie House at Palmers Island about 1.45pm on Tuesday a black Mazda 3 and a white sport utility vehicle collided.

Grafton Police Station officer in charge Chief Inspector Jo Reid said officers believed the Mazda was travelling east on Yamba Road before veering on to the wrong side of the road.

The drivers of both cars were trapped and freed by State Emergency Service personnel.

The 20-year-old driver of the Mazda 3 was taken by ambulance under police escort to be picked up by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter on the Pacific Highway.

The woman is believed to have serious internal injuries.

The driver of the other car is believed to have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Traffic was diverted along North Bank Road and Middle Road while emergency services personnel removed the cars from the scene.

Police crime scene officers are on their way to the scene to conduct further investigations.
