A young woman has been convicted in Grafton Court for driving offences the magistrate called “alarming” and “a grave risk to the lives and safety of all of us”.
Layla Jane Oxborrow, 21, faced Grafton Court on May 9 for driving with a combined high range alcohol and illicit drug, driving with a combined mid range alcohol and illicit drugs and driving while suspended.
Magistrate Kathy Crittenden told the court the high range PCA reading was .219 on November 11 and the mid range PCA reading was .146 on February 26.
Ms Crittenden told the court the mid range reading was just under the high range and Oxborrow had two drugs in her system.
“You know, because you’ve done the Traffic Offenders Program, it could have easily ended in tragedy-it’s that simple,” Ms Crittenden said.
Oxborrow’s solicitor Gemunu Kumarasinhe told the court his client is in regular employment and “trying to do her very best”.
Documents submitted to the court included a character reference from the Uniting Church and a letter written by Oxborrow.
In summing up Ms Crittenden told Oxborrow she was a young woman on the beginning of her journey fortunate to have a good job and family support.
Oxborrow was convicted of driving with high and mid-range PCA and illicit drug and sentenced to a Community Correction Order of 12 months to commence on May 9.
She was also ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and comply with any recommended rehabilitation.
