Grafton Show 2022: Action, winners and runaways at Agricultural Show

After some challenging years, the Grafton Show put on a great program featuring a runaway bull, rainbow chickens and pavillion items ‘on par with the Royal Easter Show’.

This year’s Grafton Show had it all from Women of the Land and Boy of the Barn, tales of rainbow chooks, a runaway bull - but what was most on show was Grafton pride outshining the rain.

A runaway bull in the cattle parade at the main pavilion tried to steal the show in front of a few hundred people gathered under the grandstand for the 2022 Grafton Show official opening.

The bull was a part of 60 odd cattle from largely Casino, Lismore and Maclean being judged.

Show President Rex Green said he was impressed so many cattle participated from flood affected areas, particularly praising the Maclean High School bovine program.

The Grand Parade itself was cancelled due to rain, but there was no stopping the audience who jammed into the grandstand wearing the fashion of the day: brollies, gumboots and cowboy hats.

Guest of Honour Brian Badgery summed up the proud atmosphere when he addressed the crowd.

“This ground has meant so much to so many people over the years, from the showgirls, to the footy and pony clubs and so on,” Mr Badgery said.

“And the quality of the items in the pavilion are on par with the Royal Easter Show,” he said.

And Mr Badgery, a show life member, would know.

“Mr Badgery has been steeped in agriculture and agricultural shows,” state member for Clarence Chris Gulaptis told the crowd.

Mr Gulaptis also praised Grafton Show President Rex Green for his years of dedication and voluntary hours since being president in 2014.

Chris Gulaptis praised Mr Green for being “the man of the show” and a “hands on president” who didn’t mind rolling up his sleeves and shovelling muck in the barns.

Before proceedings turned to the traditional showgirl presentations, Mr Green awarded a life membership to Robyn Brown who has only missed one show in 52 years.

Ms Brown was a previous showgirl from 1989 and Mr Green recalled her show entry one year of a so-called new breed of chickens: the rainbow chook and her rainbow eggs.

This all came unstuck when the eggs hatched during the show revealing ordinary chickens.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been lost for words,” Ms Brown said.

The definite highlight of the show for many was the presentation of the Woman of the Land, Junior Showgirl, Tween Showgirl and Boy of the Barn awards.
