Grafton’s 50m pool, dive pool, water slide and grandstand will be demolished as part of a complete overhaul for the much loved but “ageing” recreational hub.

Clarence Valley Council expects to spend a little more than $7.8 million on the changes that would lead to the construction of a new outdoor 50m Olympic pool and an indoor centre consisting of a 25m, eight-lane heated pool and a heated program and leisure pool.

The long-awaited redevelopment would also result in the removal of four trees from the northeastern edge of the site at the intersection of Turf and Oliver streets.

The council identified in a 2013 report the complex was ageing and needed repair, noting that it also closed in winter.

The development will be in two stages.

Clarence Valley Council open spaces and facilities manager Peter Birch said all the new pools would be fully accessible with ramp access.

The council is seeking public feedback on the new design.
