A truck driver recovering in Grafton Hospital is one lucky man after a miraculous escape when his truck jackknifed, spilling its load of logs on on Armidale Road.
“Lucky there were no vehicles coming the other way or we would have had a tragedy,” Captain of South Grafton Fire and Rescue NSW Paul Danvers said.
“Logs were thrown up the road when they came off the trailer,” he said.
The accident occurred at 8.am 32 kilometres south of Grafton on Armidale Road close to Goolang Bridge on April 20, 2022.
Two ambulances attended after the logging truck rolled over and began to treat the man on the scene who suffered injuries to his foot.
“When the ambulances arrived he had already self extricated meaning he wasn’t trapped,” said an Ambulance NSW spokesman.
The Fire and Rescue team were called to mitigate hazards from a diesel spill.
“Luckily the two 400 litre diesel tanks had not ruptured,” Captain Danvers said.
However there was a small amount of oil coming out of the hydraulic reservoir on the truck and engine oil coming out of the vehicle.
Captain Danvers and his team rendered the hazards safely with absorbent.
A second truck dispatched to the scene retrieved the lost logs while a backhoe was brought in to load them.
Greensill Bros Grafton spokesman Cherie Brown said the driver is fine despite the severity of the incident
“Currently we are conducting a strict accident investigation and all the relevant services to do that are currently engaged,” she said.
The police were contacted for details as to the cause of the accident but were unavailable for comment.
