It’s Premier Dominic Perrottet’s pet project that has been the target of Labor’s scare campaign but new government data shows many Western Sydney homebuyers are eager to swap stamp duty for the government’s proposed land tax.
NSW parliament will debate the government’s new proposal — to give first home buyers the option to pay upfront stamp duty or opt for an annual land tax — on Tuesday as Labor claim the scheme would put a “forever tax” on the family home.
Figures from the newly launched land tax calculator have shown eager home buyers visited the website more than 23,000 times with the bulk of register of interests coming from the Western Suburbs.
Almost 13,000 people calculated their potential land tax as of Friday with the 2145 postcode ranking number one for interest in the scheme — covering homebuyers in Constitution Hill, Girraween, Greystanes and Mays Hill.
Other western suburbs on the list of the top 10 include Penrith, Toongabbie, Parramatta and Emu Plains.
Interest was also high in the southwest across Camden, Oran Park, Oakdale and Glenmore.
Treasurer Matt Kean said people were voting with their fingers.
“More than 23,000 people have visited the First Home Buyer Choice calculator in just a few days so people are clearly voting with their fingers,” he said.
“The sooner parliament passes this legislation, the sooner first home buyers can unlock significant savings and get into their first home sooner.”
Labor finance spokesman Daniel Mookhey has accused the government of “rushing” the legislation through parliament instead of taking it to the state election.
“Rather than trying to rush this legislation through the parliament in October, the Premier should give people their say at the election in March,” he said.
