‘People in NSW would welcome that’: State Labor leader weighs in on stage three tax cuts

Labor Leader Chris Minns has finally weighed in on the future of tax relief after his shadow treasurer refused to commit to support for the Commonwealth’s stage three cuts.

Government's tax cut changes unlikely ahead of budget

Labor Leader Chris Minns has fallen short off of calling on his commonwealth counterpart to implement stage three tax cuts but said he supports the policies of the Albanese government.

Mr Minns said he won’t speculate on the future of the cuts but that the policy Anthony Albanese took to the election has not changed.

“My understanding is the government is not making made any changes to the promises they’ve made at the last state election. The last I’ve heard and read about is that the government is pursuing those stage three tax cuts. Obviously people in NSW would welcome that,” he said.

“I voted for the Albanese government, I support their policy decisions as they took to the last election and they’re getting on with the job.”

It comes after NSW Labor’s treasury spokesman Daniel Mookhey refused to commit on whether the state branch would support the tax cuts going ahead.

When asked, the shadow treasurer instead took aim at Premier Dominic Perrottet’s stamp duty reforms set to hit state parliament this week.

“The Federal Government has made clear their policy in relation to stage 3 tax cuts hasn’t changed,” Mr Mookhey said, adding the Premier had some “chutzpah” commenting on the federal tax cuts.

“The one tax the people of NSW can be certain we don’t support is the forever tax on the family home.

“Dominic Perrottet has some chutzpah. He is eager to grandstand about federal tax policy. But he is refusing to take his plan for a never-ending land tax on your family home to the next election.”

Mr Perrottet on Saturday said the Albanese’s government’s refusal to rule out paring back the cuts beyond 2024 amid stormy economic forecasts – potentially leading to a backflip on the cuts – would be a “kick in the guts” to workers.

On Sunday he told The Daily Telegraph it was “beyond belief that NSW Labor will not rule out supporting the winding-back of these tax cuts”.

“For all their talk, it’s abundantly clear that NSW Labor won’t stand up to Federal Labor when the chips are down and back in family budgets,” Mr Perrottet said.

“It’s also now crystal clear that hardworking families across NSW, including in Western Sydney will be worse off under Labor.”

He added “The decision to be made here is obvious: the tax cuts must proceed – the Federal Government must support families”.
