Two Disney ice princesses will soon be quitting Sydney as Frozen the Musical delivers its final shows here, but it won’t be long before a magical Disney nanny will be taking their place.
Disney Theatrical Productions and the NSW Government have announced that Mary Poppins will be here one year after Frozen the Musical closes on May 28.
Frozen has played the Capitol Theatre in Haymarket, whereas Mary Poppins’ crisply delivered “spit-spot” will echo around the stage of the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
Disney will present the Australian premiere of musical theatre maestro Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Mary Poppins.
The timeless classic of children’s literature was penned by the Australian-British writer P. L. Travers and transformed into a Walt Disney film in 1964.
Mary Poppins will give the NSW visitor economy a boost, Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, said.
“We anticipate that the production will generate almost $23 million in direct
visitor spend over the 21-week season,” Mr Ayres said.
Mary Poppins “flew into my heart when I first saw the movie and read P. L. Travers’
unforgettable books as a schoolboy,” co-creator and producer Cameron Mackintosh said.
“My long-held dream of creating a stage musical out of her work started in Sydney over 25 years ago after Pamela (Travers) had entrusted me to write a first treatment which was enthusiastically embraced by (Disney Theatrical’s) Tom Schumacher.”
Mackintosh’s previous production of the show was seen in Australia 11 years ago.
In a couple of weeks, the talent search to fill the leading roles of Mary Poppins, Bert and all the members of the Banks family will begin in earnest.
Mackintosh’s co-creator on the show is Oscar-winning screenwriter and Downton
Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes.
The musical’s classic songs such as Jolly Holiday, Feed the Birds, Step in Time and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious will be interspersed with new songs, music and lyrics.
Mary Poppins will play at the Lyric Theatre Sydney from May 2022 to October 2022.
