Coffs Harbour police have charged a 51-year-old man who allegedly drove while over the limit near the North Coast town on Christmas Eve.
Police said in a statement the man was an unaccompanied learner driver.
“About 5.20pm on Friday, officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting stationary speed enforcement duties on the Pacific Highway at Bonville, when they observed a white SUV travelling northbound above the sign posted speed limit,” police said.
“Officers stopped the driver – a 51-year-old man – who was subjected to a roadside breath test and allegedly returned a positive result.”
The man was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station.
There, he underwent a secondary breath analysis and this allegedly returned a high range reading of 0.166.
He was charged with high range drink-driving, driving as an unaccompanied learner driver and speeding.
Police granted the man strict conditional bail to face Coffs Harbour Local Court on Friday, February 7.
His learner’s permit and number plates were confiscated.
