A Tweed family has had a difficult start to Christmas Day after a house fire in the early hours.

Fire and Rescue NSW Tweed Heads senior firefighter Mark Donovan said multiple crews were called to a fire in Covent Gardens Way in Banora Point about 3.30am.

“The garage was pretty destroyed and whatever was in it,” Mr Donovan said.

Mr Donovan said the fire impacted part of the home’s roof as well as a portion of the loungeroom.

It is believed the occupants were a couple with a young child.

Mr Donovan said while paramedics attended the scene as a precaution, no one was injured.

“They managed to salvage some of their presents,” he said.

“They got a few things from under the tree.”

He said the home’s Christmas tree may have been damaged.

Police and electrical authorities also attended the scene.

Mr Donovan said the fire, initially reported by a neighbour, was believed to have originated in the home’s garage.

He said the exact cause was not known.

Three crews from Tweed Heads, including Hazmat, and a fire crew from Banora Point attended the scene.
