NSW Police investigating ‘suspicious’ communications tower fire at Korora

A fire at a Coffs communications tower is being treated as suspicious after thousands of residents were left without signal.

A fire at a communications tower near Sealy Lookout in Korora is being treated as “suspicious” by police.

The fire tore through telecommunications equipment, leaving many Coffs Harbour residents without TV and radio signal. System errors were reported just after midnight.

It’s believed the blaze was ignited sometime on Tuesday night.

Many Vodafone customers were impacted by the blaze.

Police attended the scene with multiple Fire and Rescue NSW crews to combat the fire.

Coffs Harbour police Detective Sergeant Aaron Van Schaik said the tower was operated by several commercial and government tenants.

Many remained without TV signal on Wednesday afternoon.

“Multiple operators are working to get the signals back,” Sgt Van Schaik said.

He said police were investigating the incident, reviewing CCTV footage and had set up a forensic examination scene.

“There are cameras in the area and we are looking at the images,” Sgt Van Schaik said.

The lookout provides a scenic view over Coffs Harbour and is a popular destination for locals.

Police have appealed for the public to report any suspicious activity near Korara Lookout or Bruxner Park Rd last night.
