The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A man in his 20s is stable after running his ute off a highway, plummeting at least 10 metres down a steep culvert.

The incident occurred last night just after 9pm on Coramba Rd, 5km north of Coffs Harbour.

It took the State Emergency Service, Police, Ambulance and RFS and eventually a tow truck to rescue the man.

He crashed into rugged terrain with heavy bush and trees, leading to a big rescue operation.

The man is believed to be in a stable condition, although suffered an injury to his abdomen.

He was transported to Coffs Harbour Hospital for inspection.

The 4WD ford ute was recovered after almost 3 hours at around 11:45pm.

A tow truck was deployed from North Coast Heavy Towing to retrieve the wrecked vehicle.

The crash – 300 metres east of the Mount Browne intersection – caused traffic to be reduced to one lane.

SES crews used a stokes litter to extract the man from the steep bush, battling wet and muddy conditions.

He was carried up with a stretcher by hand. It is believed he was heavily sedated by this stage.
