No holiday to Coffs Harbour was ever complete without a quiet one or three at the Hoey Moey Hotel at Park Beach.
The iconic watering hole in the shadow of the dunes has a storied past.
In days gone by it had a tough as teak reputation - a place to go where there was a fair chance you’d see a blue.
Today, the Hoey Moey is thoroughly modern - a popular hangout with arguably one of the best garden bars on the Australian East Coast.
The establishment has never been far from the news.
As an entertainment venue, it’s hosted some of the biggest names in modern music - including former Sherbet frontman and King of Pop Daryl Braithwaite.
Shannon Noll, the Daisy Dukes and the Black Sorrows have also gigged there.
A delve through the Coffs Coast Advocate archives reveals the pub has been a perennial headliner.
In 2010, the Australian Federal Police asked management to turn off a powerful searchlight being used in a promotion after complaints from airline pilots.
Two years later, it was back in the media when three were taken to hospital suffering stab wounds after a spirited brawl at the venue spilled onto the street.
And just last year, the Hoey Moey like a number of businesses, was listed as a site of concern after someone thought to have Covid swung by.
Being there for the community though has always been at the core of the famed hotel.
There’s been hundreds of celebrations - from birthdays through to wedding receptions.
And there’s been countless fundraisers for charities and local sport groups.
The Hoey Moey cut its teeth as a major sponsor of rugby league, and also weighed in heavily for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service when crab racing found a place inside its doors.
The Coffs Harbour Boardriders were another group well backed, while the punters came from far and wide when the pub hosted the Miss Coffs Coast competition in 2011.
Another crowd-puller were the Tradies and Pink Silk nights.
Roll forward to 2022 and the Hoey Moey remains entrenched in the community.
Today, it hangs its hat on top notch pub grub, function rooms, a bottlo, motel and backpacker accommodation - and of course it’s spectacular beer garden where many a story is told.
