Victims from a fire that engulfed a Bray St, Coffs Harbour home remain in hospital suffering burns.

Two residents were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital yesterday for treatment after the fire tore through their home on Saturday afternoon.

Significant smoke could be seen billowing from property.

Neighbour John Omtha said the smell of smoke lingered in the street and in his home a day later.

The fire destroyed the home, with Mr Omtha relieved to hear the occupants were alive.

“They had some burns on their body which need to be treated – I think they’re still in hospital,” Mr Omtha said.

Neighbours say the fire started at the rear of the home, with one concerned homeowner fearing his own house was going to catch alight.

“I was worried a gas tank near their barbecue would explode,” a neighbour said.

Firefighters – some of who wore hazmat gear – battled the blaze from the rear of the home.

The street was closed for several hours as police and paramedics arrived on the scene.

The cause of the blaze is unknown at this stage but an investigation is underway.

Fire and Rescue NSW has urged residents and homeowners to install working smoke alarms.

More to come.
