Police have charged a man allegedly found with more than $2 million worth of cocaine in the Byron Shire

Police will allege they found 6.7kg of the drug hidden in various parts of the vehicle, which they say was stopped because the driver was speeding near Bangalow.

Police have charged a man with a serious drug supply offence after they allegedly found more than $2 million worth of cocaine in a vehicle near Bangalow.

Police will allege officers attached to the North Coast Region Enforcement Squad observed a gold-coloured Nissan X-Trail travelling northbound at speed on the M1 Pacific Motorway near Bangalow shortly before 3pm on Tuesday, June 1.

Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, a 24-year-old man from Pottsville.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The man was subjected to a roadside breath test which was negative.

Police conducted a search of the Nissan after further inquiries.

Inside the vehicle, police will allege they found a vacuum-sealed bag containing a substance believed to be cocaine, as well as cash.

Those items, and the vehicle, were seized for further forensic examination.

The man was taken to Byron Bay Police Station and charged with supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, dealing with the proceeds of crime and exceeding the speed limit by more than 10km/h.

He was refused bail to face Lismore Local Court on Wednesday.

Police said he remains bail refused and is due to next face court in Byron Bay on Monday, June 7.

Police will allege the vehicle was further examined by detectives on Wednesday, with the help of the Police Dog Unit, and officers found a further five packages of cocaine hidden inside a speaker box under the car’s rear seats.

Police will allege they found a total of 6.7 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of more than $2 million.

They said further charges were expected to be laid and inquiries were continuing.
