A phone tap during a police investigation into a large-scale Byron Bay heroin dealer’s phone messages revealed distressing details of a heroin overdose.
Suellen Carr, 58, pleaded guilty at Byron Bay court on Tuesday to dealing with the proceeds of crime, processing an illegal weapon and supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis.
An investigation named Wiggigia targeting heroin dealers caught the Byron Bay woman supplying 14.5 grams of heroin to regular customers while her phone was tapped.
Messages from March 5 revealed Carr’s best friend from Suffolk Park overdosed the day after Carr supplied her with 0.2g of heroin, according to police facts.
“Her bloke got home from work and found her dead in the bath,” Carr said in a message.
“She must have been drinking or something.”
No one has been charged in relation to the death.
Carr was unemployed and had been supplying heroin daily for money.
Police detailed meeting places including William Flick Lane and the end of Cape Court near the IGA in Byron Bay.
Police arrested Carr on March 23 and found $4060 in a bedside table inside her home, the facts stated.
Defence lawyer Anderson Clark said Carr began selling heroin during the Covid pandemic.
“It started as an addiction,” Ms Clark said.
Magistrate Karen Stafford said many of Carr’s customers were known to her.
“You played a role in enabling criminals,” Ms Stafford said.
Carr was sentenced to an 18 month intensive community corrections order with supervision and was fined $500 fine.
