A Byron Bay drug dealer faces 18 months in jail after police busted him during an investigation targeting the ongoing supply of heroin in the Tweed and Byron districts.

David Ostling, 63, pleaded guilty at Byron Bay Court on Tuesday to supplying illegal drugs on an ongoing basis.

A police investigation called Wirriga targeted heroin dealers in the neighbouring regions in 2021.

The court heard Ostling, who is listed as unemployed, was caught dealing heroin for profit daily in Byron Bay between March 5 and March 23 in 2021.

Police documents state officers listened to phone call conversations between Ostling and his customers, revealing the locations where the heroin was being delivered.

One meeting spot included Byron Bay’s IGA.

Police found 1g of heroin, scales and extra clipseal bags when they searched Ostling’s house.

Ostling told officers he used heroin regularly and put money in with other people to buy the drug.

But police facts state when it came to dealing heroin he “seemed to have a bad memory and could not remember his participation”.

Magistrate Karen Stafford sentenced Ostling to an 18-month supervised intensive community corrections order, also known as jail in the community.

“We need to get him off heroin,” she said.
