A Northern Rivers man bashed his partner, broke into another woman’s home through an air duct and was involved in multiple police pursuits before he was finally locked up.

Brandon Darren Kelly was found guilty of charges including three counts of engaging in a police pursuit, stalking and assault occasioning bodily harm in Byron Bay Local Court.

Police spotted the 23-year-old driving a stolen Holden Commodore ute on the Pacific Highway on September 30 2020, police documents state.

A chase began at Kundabung when Kelly failed to stop and hit 198km in a 110kmh zone, overtaking several cars.

Police used road spikes to bring the 60km pursuit to an end and the ute ploughed into a concrete barrier.

Officers were arresting Kelly when they noticed their police car had not been parked properly and it began reversing down the highway, giving Kelly the chance to run.

He climbed an incline and scaled a fence before stealing another car, a Holden Rodeo, in Warrell Creek.

Police started a second chase at Macksville, the Holden was hit by road spikes and Kelly turned off to Nambucca Heads, dodging another set of spikes.

He then hit the highway again and drove on the wrong side of the road, forcing “cars to take evasive action”, police documents state.

Officers called off the chase and then “numerous triple-0 calls” were received by motorists reporting Kelly’s ute speeding the wrong way down the highway.

Police said the offending ”was dangerous and extreme”.

Late last year, on October 11, Kelly stole a car from a Liverpool Plains car park and a chase began when he was spotted driving the vehicle on Bangalow Rd, Byron Bay.

Kelly veered onto the wrong side of the road, travelled on a bike path and dangerous overtook vehicles, forcing the pursuit to be terminated.

The car was then found on Keats St in Byron Bay.

On September 26, 2020, Kelly violently attacked his then-partner.

He punched the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground, before he kicked her in the head two times at her West Tamworth home.

The woman escaped, fearing for her life, and was admitted to Tamworth Base Hospital suffering bruising, red marks on her face and swelling.

The woman said Kelly threatened to kill her next time he spotted her.

Kelly also breached an AVO by breaking into another woman’s Hillvue home through an “evaporative air duct” on December 12, 2019.

“Kelly then proceeded to have a shower at the woman’s house,” police stated.

Kelly was confronted and told the woman how he got into her house, before he “clenched his fists and puffed his chest out” as he walked off.

Kelly’s then-partner was taken to hospital after he attacked her.

The woman told police Kelly’s behaviour was “becoming more erratic.”

Kelly, described as “uncooperative” and “belligerent”, also stole $320 of items from Coppers Surf in Coffs Harbour.

Kelly was found guilty in the court of three counts each of engaging in a police pursuit and dangerous driving, driving recklessly and speeding, five counts of driving and taking a conveyance and three counts of driving while his licence was suspended.

Kelly was also found guilty of larceny, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalking and intimidation intending to cause physical harm, two counts of unlawfully obtaining goods and four counts of failing to attend court, leading to four arrest warrants, the court heard on Monday.
