A magistrate has slapped a Byron Bay drink driver with a hefty fine for getting behind the wheel at more than three times the legal alcohol limit after a Christmas party.

It’s the second time Jesse Martig has been caught drink driving in a year.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty at Byron Bay Court to driving with a high-range PCA.

He returned a reading of 0.177 on December 17, 2022, the court heard on January 30.

The Byron Bay man was pulled over for a random breath test on Shirley St on his way home from the Lovers Lane party about 1.30am.

Martig told police he had a few beers at Lovers Lane on Lawson St in Byron Bay, according to police documents.

The court heard it was the second time Martig had been caught drink driving in 12 months.

The first was a low range drink driving offence.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said Martig “made a terrible decision to drive home”.

“What troubles me is that you were suspended for three months and you’ve done it again at a more serious level a year later,” she said.

Martig was fined $2000, disqualified from driving for nine months and will have to use an alcohol interlock device for four years once he is allowed to drive again.
