Rumours are flying in northern NSW towns after a police helicopter was spotted on the move overhead and fuelling up in Bangalow, but officers have remained tight-lipped.
Residents have taken to social media pages in Byron, Lennox Head and other locations in the north of the state speculating on Wednesday.
Some are adamant the police chopper is in the area to help pinpoint illegal cannabis crops.
“Crop chopper is on Lennox make sure you give thing a big brown eye if they fly over your place,” one man wrote.
NSW Police has been approached for more information about the helicopter’s mission.
But a spokesman would only confirm an operation was underway and more information could not be provided immediately due to operational reasons.
Police previously touted a cannabis bust involving plants with an estimated value of $5 million in Ellangowan, an hour commute from Byron Bay, in February last year – one of the largest Australian seizures of cannabis in recent history.
Officers found 19 large greenhouses and more than 16,550 cannabis plants, police stated.
More information is being sought about the current police operation.
