Organisers of community events across the Byron Shire have been invited to nominate for a share of sponsorship from the council.

Byron Shire Council has opened up nominations for its Community Events and Sponsorship Fund, which has a total of $10,000 available.

Five events will share in the funds.

Byron mayor Michael Lyon said the fund was designed to help the people who run events that support the local community and economy.

“The grants can be used to get an event established or perhaps to embed sustainability initiatives for things such as waste or recycling,” Mr Lyon said.

“The pandemic had a huge impact on local events last year so some people might take this opportunity to seek funding to help implement COVID safety measures.

“Our Shire is well known for its events and while some are well-established, others are trying to get established and this is where our fund can provide some help.

“Music, film, environment, sports – the events that are held in Byron Shire are incredibly diverse and not only do they bring an incredible amount of money into the area, they also bring our community together.

“It is important that we attract and foster events that reflect our community and environment.”

Previous recipients have included the Ingenuity 3D Film Festival, Northern Rivers Food Harvest Autumn Fair, Shedding Open Day, Carna Byron and the Seabin Bloom Experience.”

Applications to access the fund close at 4pm on June 11. Apply here.

Successful applicants will be notified on July 7.
