Buying Byron show fails to impress Mayor Michael Lyon

A new program is set to showcase the “ultra-competitive, highly focused” market of “the sexiest real estate on earth”.

A new reality show will focus on Byron Bay’s property market.

Another reality television show based in Byron Bay is in the pipeline.

This time, the focus will be on the town’s eye-watering real estate market.

Residents earlier this year protested against plans for Byron Baes – a docusoap to focus on the lives of Byron influencers.

Byron Baes, being produced for Netflix by Eureka Productions, has been described as one local councillor as a “hand grenade” that would damage the region’s culture.

The newcomer to the Byron reality scene is Buying Byron, to be produced by EQ Media Group for Nine.

Mayor Michael Lyon isn’t thrilled.

“It’s just tiresome, really,” Mr Lyon said.

“It’s another crass concept to leverage off our fame that appeals to the masses.”

The Nine network has touted the show as an inside look at the “ultra-competitive, highly focused” market of “the sexiest real estate on earth”.

“Everyone is trying to get a piece of the Byron Bay pie,” the network said on its website.

“It’s where Hollywood A-listers are living the dream and Instagram influencers are flocking to in droves.”

Viewers have been promised “a glimpse into Australia’s most prestigious playground, where the spectacular beaches and seaside glamour set the scene for all the action” involving beachside deals and feuds all revolving around prime property with sky-high prices.

“We’ve become the focus for attention and vacuous reality shows seem to be wanting to get a piece of the action,” Mr Lyon said.

Mr Lyon said he would prefer to see the focus shift to more important issues facing the shire.
