Ashley Jayd Light caught drink driving in Byron Bay

A tradie who threw up at the police station after his arrest has been sentenced for drink driving. See what the magistrate had to say to him and his fellow offenders.

After dealing with a tradie who made a clumsy attempt to avoid being breath tested, a Byron Bay magistrate took the opportunity to slam the other drink drivers in her courtroom.

Ashley Jayd Light, of Box Hill in Sydney, pleaded guilty at Byron Bay Local Courthouse to a drink driving charge, after returning a middle-range blood alcohol reading of 0.237.

The 33-year-old was driving a grey 2020 Ford Ranger Utility south on Bangalow Road in Byron Bay at 10pm on September 9, police documents state.

As Light approached a random breath test site, he made a quick left turn into Arawal Court which is a dead-end street.

Police immediately trailed his vehicle as they believed this was an attempt to avoid testing.

After being stopped by police, Light was breath tested and after he returned a positive reading he was asking to exit the vehicle and was seen swaying side to side.

His movements were “sluggish”, police state.

Light was placed under arrest and taken to Byron Bay police station where he threw up in the bathroom twice.

Police state “he was unable to say how much or where he was drinking”.

“He only knew the drinks were Stone and Wood.”

Light has now completed the traffic offenders program.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said getting behind the wheel while drunk “puts lives in danger“.

“There are many people here in court for drink driving today, the legislation has been in place for a long time now so I don’t understand why people keep doing it.”

“The court has to send a message that if you act like this, there have to be consequences.”

Light was convicted and fined $600. He will be disqualified for three months and must have an interlock for a 12-month period.
