Just how a little boy got into a dog enclosure where he was mauled to death by two animals is set to be the main focus of a police investigation, after the horrific incident in country NSW on Tuesday.
Jyedon Pollard, 2, was living with his mum Kesha and sisters in a Cowra motel when two resident dogs - a Rottweiler and a cattle dog - attacked, inflicting ultimately fatal wounds on his throat and face.
Police sources said initial investigations suggest the dogs were in an enclosure at the rear of the motel at the time of the attack.
Detectives will return to the Country Gardens Inn motel on Wednesday to try and determine how little Jyedon got into the dog pen.
Distraught relatives of the child last night described it as a “freakish attack” when the dogs, who belonged to staff at the motel, charged at the toddler and could not be stopped.
The boy’s mother, Kesha Pollard, had been living temporarily at the Country Gardens Motel with her three children, until permanent accommodation could be found.
A relative told The Daily Telegraph the children had played with the two dogs before without any problem.
She said the two dogs, a Rottweiler and a cattle dog savaged the child in front of his sisters and mum “for no known reason”.
“He’s the most precious and beautiful kid, no one can believe it’s happened to him,” a relative said.
Jyedon was mauled by the two dogs about 10.20am on Tuesday.
He suffered serious injuries to his neck and face during the attack.
A member of the public put the boy in a car and rushed him to Cowra Hospital.
He was then flown in a helicopter to Westmead Hospital in Sydney while in a critical condition, but doctors were unable to save him and he was declared dead about 3.30pm.
NSW Police Superintendent Bob Noble said the boy’s mother was at the motel when he was attacked.
“The child’s mother, who was with the child, was distraught, as you could imagine,” he said. “It’s a very sensitive issue … we’re very concerned for the family and relatives, we just want to extend some understanding to the community at this time.”
Police said the two dogs were seized by local council rangers.
A crime scene was also cordoned off with police tape at the motel.
Video footage taken at the scene showed police officers walking through a car park area of the motel next to rooms.
Country Gardens Motel staff declined to comment when contacted.
Cowra mayor Bill West told The Daily Telegraph the incident had distressed the community.
“Incredibly sad, tragic events like these certainly do distress the broader community, who will always offer whatever sympathy and support they can to the family and loved ones of those involved,” he said.
A NSW Police spokesman said an investigation had been launched into the boy’s death.
“A crime scene was established at the motel, which continues to be examined by specialist officers,” the spokesman said.
“The child’s mother was distraught as you could imagine.”
