An elderly man has been hospitalised after crashing his car into a service station in North-West Sydney, causing damage to property and only just missing bystanders.
Shocking video footage of the West Ryde 7-Eleven service station shows the 76-year-old man behind the wheel of a silver Toyota Camry driving at speed into a fire hydrant, ramming down a ‘no-stopping’ street sign and nearly missing a pedestrian walking close by.
Emergency services attended the petrol station on Victoria Road at 5pm on Saturday October 29 after reports of the incident from those at the scene.
Concerned service station customers and bystanders can be seen in the video footage running away from the vehicle and attempting to intervene as the driver proceeds to charge across the driveway.
One man was spotted limping at speed across the petrol station, trying to avoid the car’s path, while another man standing close to the main road sprints away from the Camry.
Prior mounting the kerb and striking the hydrant, the elderly man reversed his car into a vehicle parked within the service station at a bowser, collided with an air pump and fence and then accelerated into the front of the store.
NSW Police who attended the crash noted structural damage to the shopfront as a result of the collision.
The driver who was taken immediately to Ryde Hospital nearby for observation was breath tested and returned a negative result.
A NSW Police spokesman said: “There were no other reports of injuries, and a question of fitness will be lodged in relation to the man’s driver’s licence.”
