An international student allegedly caught speeding at 280km/h, believed to be the fastest ever recorded in NSW, told police he was running late for work.

The 22-year-old man was caught climbing to the staggering speed near Mittagong in the state’s Southern Highlands on Monday morning.

Officers attached to the Hume Traffic and Highway Patrol Command pulled the man over in a blue Volkswagen Golf after he recorded a speed that exceeded the area’s limit of 110km/h by up to 160km/h an hour.

He was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for drive speed/manner dangerous and is due to appear in Moss Vale Local Court on Tuesday 20 December 2022.

His driving privileges have been withdrawn.

Superintendent Joseph Thone, Southern Commander of the NSW Highway patrol blasted the actions of the young man.

“That is a ridiculous speed to travelling. Things happen so fast you would have no time to react,’’ he said.

“If you want to kill someone else that is up to you but he could easily have wiped out a family, he added.

Supt. Thone said it was the highest speed recorded on that section of road and one of the highest he had ever heard of.

“There are many ways to come unstuck and be detected speeding on that part of the state’s roads. You face thousands of dollars in fines and the loss of your licence,’’ he said.

In another incident on Saturday officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting stationary speed enforcement on the Princes Highway, Broughton, when they detected a BMW sedan allegedly travelling at 177km/h in a 100km/h sign-posted area.

The driver – a 20-year-old man and a P1 provisional licence holder who is restricted to a maximum speed limit of 90km/h – was issued a penalty notice for driver exceed speed greater than 45km/h, and not display P-plates.

His driver’s licence was suspended for 6 months.
