A man has been charged following the grisly discovery of a woman’s body in a car boot following a welfare check at Evans Head.
Jeramie James Massie, 39, has been accused of domestic violence-related murder and improperly interfering with a corpse or human remains.
He was refused bail to face Lismore Local Court on Saturday.
Emergency services were called to a unit on Park St in the small northern NSW town just after 8am on Friday.
Richmond Police District officers found the body of the 60-year-old woman in the boot of a white Volkswagen Golf hatchback.
The car was surrounded by police tape and forensics officers were examining the scene on throughout the day.
Neighbours told NewsLocal the man arrested, later known to be Massie, was the slain woman’s son.
Some staying at Reflections Holiday Park, part of which backs on to the unit block, spoke of seeing the VW pulling up to the home just before dark on Thursday.
Another holiday park visitor, who requested anonymity, said they saw a man, Massie, being led to a police car in handcuffs.
Janice Higgs, another visitor at the park, said the incident unfolding next door was “concerning”.
“Nobody likes to hear about something like this happening so close to you,” she said.
Massie was taken to Ballina Police Station and later faced court.
