Emergency services were called to a Park St unit in the northern NSW town of about 2500 people on Friday morning, near Evans’ small shopping strip.

Richmond Police District officers found Ms George deceased in the boot of a white Volkswagen Golf hatchback about 42km south of Ballina and 44km southeast of Lismore.

She may have been dead since Tuesday morning, police believe.

NSW Police arrested Massie, who was living at the same address, according to court documents.

He was charged and refused bail at Lismore Local Court on Saturday.

Forensics officers combed the area and have been returning to Evans Head to interview persons of interest or assistance in the case.

Meanwhile, Ms George has been described by one Evans Head resident as happy-go-lucky and much-loved by many in the tight-knit community.

“I often spotted her around town. She was always lovely – really friendly,” she said, asking to remain unnamed.

“She was always happy and smiling. She was a beautiful lady. A lovely lady”

She said Ms George was often out and about, chatting away with locals, and her loss would be felt across town.

Another resident took to Facebook, alongside others impacted, to exclaim Ms George “was such a beautiful lady”.

“May she fly high”, she added.

A third woman said her heart was breaking after she heard of the horrific discovery.

Friday’s find prompted many social media users to point out it was International Women’s Day – and the prevalence of violence against women.
