Monica Rose Sines charged with attacking neighbour with metal curtain rod in Ballina dispute

A Northern Rivers woman has been accused of attacking her neighbour with a metal curtain rod and then threatening to slash her throat with a knife, escalating a dispute.

A Northern Rivers woman has been accused of attacking her neighbour with a metal curtain rod and then threatening to slash her throat with a knife, escalating a dispute.

Ballina woman Monica Rose Sines fronted Ballina Local Court over videolink from custody.

She pleaded not guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, intimidation and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to failing to appear in accordance with bail conditions.

Police allege in court documents that a neighbour approached Sines asking if she could stop her family members tormenting the alleged victim about 11am on September 23 last year.

Sines retrieved a metal curtain rod from her home and the other woman armed herself with a broom handle, police allege.

It’s alleged Sines struck the other woman’s face and forearms, while the neighbour used the broom handle to try to block the attack.

Police allege Sines went into her home once the woman fell to the ground and returned with a yellow-handled kitchen knife.

It’s also alleged the woman told Sines she was calling police for help and the knife was held at her throat.

Police allege Sines threatened: “You do that and I’ll slice your neck, you fat c--t.”

“You go to call the police, I’ll kill you.”

Soon after, the neighbour phoned triple-0 suffering from a cut to her chin and bruising on an elbow and her forearms.

Sines did not appear to face court as needed and a warrant was put out for her arrest, the court heard.

On September 5, Magistrate Kathy Crittenden Sines told the court Sines had spent three months in custody on remand.

Sines was described as pregnant and “vulnerable”, with the birth of her baby imminent.

The court heard Sines would raise self-defence as she fought the three charges.

Ms Crittenden granted bail and ordered Sines to report to Lismore Police Station daily.
