A Goonellabah man arrested in a police operation in Ballina has been refused bail by a court.
Sean Brannigan, 24, was arrested at a service station on the Bruxner Highway at West Ballina shortly before midday on Wednesday, October 6.
NSW Police said in a statement the arrest came after an investigation into the alleged acquisition of firearms across NSW which involved the Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command.
Police will allege they found $7000 cash and a mobile phone inside Mr Brannigan’s car as well as ammunition inside a jacket and in a bag in the car’s boot.
The items were seized along with the vehicle for further forensic examination.
Police said they then raided an East Ballina home about 1.45pm the same day.
Officers allege they seized two pairs of knuckle dusters, three mobile phones, an electronic storage device and cannabis.
Mr Brannigan was taken to Ballina Police Station where he was charged with acquiring a pistol without a licence or permit, dealing with the property proceeds of crime, possessing ammunition without holding a licence/permit/authority, and two counts of possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit.
He entered no formal pleas to any of those charges when the case went before Lismore Local Court on Thursday.
Mr Brannigan was refused bail by the court.
He is due to face Ballina Local Court by video link from custody on October 27.
Police said investigators were assisted by the tactical operations unit, the police helicopter and the dog unit.
The Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command will allege in court that the man attempted to acquire an unauthorised firearm.
Police said there was no ongoing threat to the community in association with the operation.
