Nominate a black spot near you that needs fixing now

Are you worried about a dangerous road or intersection near you? You can now nominate a location you think needs fixing.

The Federal Government has called for road black spots nominations.

“Fix our roads” is a pretty common catchcry on the Northern Rivers.

But what can you do about getting black spots fixed?

The Federal Government has committed extra funds to its Local and State Government Road Safety Package, but it needs to know where the black spots are, and that’s where you come in.

Community groups, motorist organisations, industry organisations, councils and individuals are invited to nominate black spot sites around Australia to be considered for treatment.

A black spot nomination form must be filled out with supporting documentation – demonstrating crash history and benefit to the community, among other factors – which would then be examined by a panel to determine eligibility for funding.

A black spot consultative panel, chaired by a member of parliament or senator appointed by the responsible minister, has been established in each state and territory.

Consultative panels consist of representatives drawn from community and road user groups, industry, Australian and local government, and state road and transport agencies.

All nominations are referred to the appropriate consultative panel, which generally meets annually to recommend projects for consideration and approval by the responsible minister.

As part of the Local and State Government Road Safety Package announced in the 2019-20 Budget, the Australian Government committed an additional $50 million per year from 2019-20 to the Black Spot Program.

The Government will provide $1.1 billion to the Black Spot Program from the 2013-2014 financial year to the 2023-24 financial year, with an ongoing commitment of $110 million each year following.

The program aims to reduce the number of road crashes by funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations.

The Black Spot Program makes an important contribution in reducing the national road toll under the National Road Safety Strategy, and saves the community “many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented”.
