A new $19.4 million boutique hotel coined the Surf Lodge has been flagged for a growing northern NSW tourist town.

Lennox Head has long been a favourite among visitors to the Northern Rivers, particularly campers and caravan-dwellers – with tea tree-stained Lake Ainsworth right across from the beach at the northern end of Pacific Parade.

Now, developer Graham Dunn is pushing for a fresh 35-room hotel at 52-54 Ballina St, near Seven Mile and Lennox Head beaches.

Mr Dunn, who has previously pitched an apartment block at 139 Jonson St, Byron Bay, states in documents lodged with Ballina Shire Council that community reaction has largely been positive

The documents state key stakeholders have been approached and it was made clear “that regulated tourism accommodation in the town centre was sorely needed”.

The proposal comes during “the painful process underway in neighbouring Byron Shire to try and reign in short term holiday letting of residential homes”.

A 60-day cap has been imposed in a bid to somewhat ease housing pressure.

If the Lennox project is approved, it would include bunk rooms, family suites and “accessible” rooms.

The hotel would also feature a bar, swimming pool, and a restaurant open to the public. Reception would be staffed 24/7 and two levels of basement carparking would have 86 spaces.

The proposed development sits at 9.65m – exceeding the area’s nine metre height limit.

The Surf Lodge pitch comes on the back of a flurry of development proposals at Lennox.

One of the largest is colloquially referred to as “Epiq Lennox” — part of the lucrative Epiq Estate, where blocks of land have been quickly snapped up for soaring prices.
